Field Trip: Japanese Friendship Garden Join us for a visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix! Students will explore the beautiful gardens, learn about Japanese culture and traditions, and experience a peaceful space inspired by the art and design of Japanese gardens. During our visit, students will have the opportunity to observe plants, water features, architecture, and other elements of the garden while learning about the cultural meaning behind them. It’s a great chance to get out and enjoy one of Phoenix’s unique cultural spaces. Then each student will rotate through these 3 activites: 1.) Docent-led tour (45 min.) 2.) Shodo Japanese Brush Calligraphy (ages 12 and up) (45 min.) Experience the elegance of Japanese calligraphy, learning basic strokes and creating beautiful characters. Enhance focus and discipline through this traditional art form. 3.) Kokeshi Doll Making (ages 6 and up) (45 min.) Learn about traditional kokeshi dolls, and decorate your own to take home. Bring sunscreen, bottled water, and an art apron or wear clothes you don't mind getting possibly black ink on, as the ink is not washable & will stain. Children 6 and under are free to come tag along with older siblings.
